The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council as chief legal advisor to the City Council, City Manager, operating departments, and all appointed boards and commissions. The Attorney provides a full range of legal services to the City and manages outside special counsel.

The City Attorney focuses on the legal options and risks associated with City actions. The City Attorney drafts necessary legal documents, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other documents pertaining to the City's business. The City Attorney defends and prosecutes or retains counsel to defend and prosecute all civil actions and proceedings to which the City is a party and prosecutes all criminal actions involving the Los Altos Municipal Code.

The Los Altos City Attorney is a part-time contract position.
The contract for City Attorney is reviewed annually by the City Council.
